In this talk, we will delve into details about these three communities, discussing why understanding and growing them is important for your projects, and exploring strategies you can employ to achieve this.

<event>Community Over Code 2026</event><event_url>https://communityovercode.org/</event_url><event_location>Glasgow, UK</event_location>

What Happens After You Fork an OSS Project?

For decades, the standard PostgreSQL playbook has included an external connection pooler like PgBouncer or PgPool-II and proxies like HAProxy for service discovery, which we won’t see generally with other database installations like Oracle or SQLServer. This architectural pattern, mainly born from the high cost of process forking in older operating systems, is often treated as gospel. But what if this long-held wisdom is now outdated? Thu, 05 Mar 2026 00:00:00 UTC

Modernizing Postgres Communication with Hackorum In 2026, the debate over whether mailing lists are still “state of the art” continues to divide developers. While some view them as relics, we cannot neglect the unique benefits of their decentralized, archival nature. Rather than fighting over platforms or ignoring the friction, Hackorum asks a simpler question: Why not just improve the user experience?Hackorum transforms the daunting mailing list “firehose” into a modern, forum-style interface without breaking the underlying email culture. It is designed to lower the barrier for new contributors while providing power tools for veterans:Seamless Integration: Real-time sync between mailing lists and daily sync of the Commitfest status.Modern UX: Per-message read tracking, tagging, and contributor profiles.Enhanced Coordination: Shared notes and mentions to streamline complex reviews. We have to stay open minded and willing to expand our horizon and as such Hackorum is rapidly evolving. While our roots are in development, we are currently expanding to include broader mailing lists like -general and -docs. Our goal is to make the entire Postgres ecosystem more accessible and usable for everyone. Join us for a demo of the latest updates and help us shape the future of Postgres communication. https://hackorum.dev/

<event>PostgreSQL Berlin March 2026 Meetup</event><event_url>https://www.meetup.com/postgresql-meetup-berlin/events/313412510/</event_url><event_location>Berlin, Germany</event_location>

Are We Ready for Self-Driving Databases?

This tool started as a simple continuous backup solution for Point-in-time Recovery (PITR). The Binary Log Server has a huge potential to become a first-class citizen in the MySQL infrastructure with multi-tenant support, REST API for management, and basic event data querying capabilities. The Binary Log Server can also serve as an intermediate link in complex replication topologies. It supports local file storage and AWS S3 for keeping binlog data and can be easily extended with other storage providers. https://github.com/Percona-Lab/percona-binlog-server

<event>MySQL Belgian Days (preFOSDEM) 2026</event><event_url>https://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/events/mysql-belgian-aka-pre-fosdem-days/</event_url><event_location>Belgian, Brussels</event_location>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5se7UKErguU

Bringing Flamegraphs to MySQL Query Optimization

Later on, Tanel Poder introduced the same concept for Oracle queries. This time, I’m bringing this idea for the first time as an open-source project to MySQL. Using the new JSON format for MySQL, we can now perform detailed query analysis based on the actual execution plan, displaying the query’s internal operations in a way that can be programmatically consumed and visualized. In this session, we will walk through how to transform raw execution-plan data into flame graphs and explore the benefits that visualization brings and how it helps us to interpret and diagnose query behavior.

<event>MySQL Belgian Days (preFOSDEM) 2026</event><event_url>https://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/events/mysql-belgian-aka-pre-fosdem-days/</event_url><event_location>Belgian, Brussels</event_location>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdx9leN2kBg

A Quick Intro to MySQL JSON Duality Views

One way of looking at Kubernetes is that it is all about convenience. Considering you are using an operator, you can easily and quickly deploy a new database environment in the cloud that is highly available and comes pre-configured with backups. But do we get the same performance from our database compared to running it in the same cloud but without Kubernetes? After all, the latter implies using containers on top of an already virtualized environment, over which we have less control.

<event>MySQL Belgian Days (preFOSDEM) 2026</event><event_url>https://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/events/mysql-belgian-aka-pre-fosdem-days/</event_url><event_location>Belgian, Brussels</event_location><slides>https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1l3ZKxfgQM6DUMeCTjVFzYTPxdlmUQTZ6UPs4nLKNbIA/edit?usp=sharing</slides>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjEAZhSBy7k

What happens when you run a 10 TB MySQL database on Kubernetes?

Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) has been a long-standing challenge in the PostgreSQL community. While proprietary solutions exist and major patch sets have been proposed, the topic continues to spark debate on the hackers mailing list, with no clear path forward. Our team decided to take a different approach: instead of building TDE directly into PostgreSQL, we explored how far we could go by implementing it as an extension, pushing core changes only where extensibility improvements were needed. This has been, and still is, a demanding project. Along the way, we have built multiple prototypes, hit dead ends, and uncovered design trade-offs that were not obvious at the start. In this talk, we will share the technical lessons from our journey: what failed, what succeeded, how our extension-based approach actually works, and which challenges remain unsolved.

<event>PGConf EU 2025 Riga</event><event_url>https://2025.pgconf.eu</event_url><event_location>Riga, Latvia</event_location><slides>https://www.postgresql.eu/events/pgconfeu2025/sessions/session/7191/slides/807/PGConf%20EU%202025%20Riga%20TDE%20slides.pdf</slides>

What implementing pg_tde taught us about PostgreSQL

From idea to patch proposals, it’s a story of navigating PostgreSQL’s internals, Community realities, and trade-offs between extension and core changes. Why weren’t existing hooks enough? What friction did we hit? How was the experience with the Community feedback cycle? What customer feedback shaped the final design and how did users react to the proposed solutions? Based on years of work to deliver a critical enterprise capability, this talk is a diary of what it took to deliver Transparent Data Encryption as an extension to PostgreSQL, from a product manager who lived through it.

<event>PGConf EU 2025 Riga</event><event_url>https://2025.pgconf.eu</event_url><event_location>Riga, Latvia</event_location><slides>https://www.postgresql.eu/events/pgconfeu2025/sessions/session/7191/slides/807/PGConf%20EU%202025%20Riga%20TDE%20slides.pdf</slides>

Azure DBaaS on Your Terms: Gaining Full Control Without the Operational Headache

<event>MySQL BR Conf 2025</event><event_location>São Paulo, Brazil</event_location>

Kubernetes from the Database Out

In this presentation, we will look at currently available, popular, and free open-source database observability tools, comparing their capabilities and limitations. These include OpenTelemetry with Jaeger, as well as Prometheus & Grafana, VictoriaMetrics, Zabbix, and Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM). A good presentation also has a practical use case - in my case, I will illustrate PMM, which my team and I quickly set up to observe our new MongoDB multi-cluster synchronization tool. Tue, 01 Apr 2025 00:00:00 UTC

Running PostgreSQL in Kubernetes is becoming increasingly popular, but managing database extensions in this environment presents a challenge. Containers are designed to be immutable, making it difficult to add extensions after the database is up and running. Rebuilding containers every time you need a new extension defeats the purpose of using pre-built images with security and best practices baked in. This talk explores different approaches to managing PostgreSQL extensions in Kubernetes, including their pros and cons, and discusses potential future standards for streamlined extension management.

<event>Kubecon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2025</event><event_url>https://kccnceu2025.sched.com/</event_url><event_location>London, UK</event_location>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_arr3sEckSw

Kubernetes from the Database Out

However, many users are unaware of the sheer power hiding inside its SQL engine and still write SQL-92 statements. With advanced SQL capabilities, much higher concurrency and performance can be achieved. This talk discusses some of the modern SQL techniques for developing applications with examples. • Implementation of data retention policy (archiving and purging) as a single statement. • Partitioning large tables without causing heavy wait locks or downtime. • Advanced uses of CTE - Complex transactions as a single statement. • Modern features like Merge and its use, such as replacing pl/pgsql procedures with single statements. • Cost of rollbacks and method to avoid

<event>PGConf India 2025</event><event_url>https://pgconf.in/conferences/pgconfin2025</event_url><event_location>Bangalore, India</event_location><slides>https://pgconf.in/files/presentations/2025/862.pdf</slides>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5pQXoSV6dk

pgBackRest: Elevating PostgreSQL Backup Game

Delivering software fast is one piece of the deployment puzzle, but delivering it securely is the glue that keeps your puzzle from falling apart. Software supply chain attacks are on the rise with security exploits directly targeting open source projects, central repositories, and software package managers. With 90% of enterprise companies using open source software in their builds no one is immune to these attacks and now more than ever the community is working hard to create safeguards and tooling to prevent potential attacks. The question then becomes who should you look to for best in class security protocols? Thankfully the open source community is banding together and foundations like OpenSSF, CNCF and OWASP and companies are working to solve security problems. To help ensure a secure SDLC, these developer focused communities are investing time, energy, money and innovation in projects that provide security solutions. This talk will give a brief overview of some major attacks in the last decade, it will underscore the importance of securing your software supply chain at the source and will highlight a some open source projects that are on the market that are helping to close the security gaps.

<event>State of Open Con 2025</event><event_url>https://stateofopencon.com/</event_url><event_location>London, UK</event_location>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB1hEKXIFjE

Panel: Cloud Native, Cost Conscious, No Comprimise: Leveraging Open Source Databases in Financial Industry

Support for stored programs written in JavaScript (often abbreviated as JS) was added by Oracle to MySQL version 9.0. Unfortunately, this feature is only available in MySQL Enterprise Edition and not in Community version of MySQL. Percona is working on an alternative, free and open-source implementation of JS stored programs for its Percona Server for MySQL, based on widely used V8 engine (the latest version of code is available on Percona’s GitHub at ** https://github.com/percona/percona-server/tree/js-lang** ). This talk will provide an overview of this alternative implementation. We will discuss what features are supported, what are the limitations and how this implementation is different from the one from Upstream. We will also talk about performance results for this implementation, some interesting implementation details and challenges we encountered while working on it.

<event>FOSDEM 2025</event><event_url>https://fosdem.org/2025/</event_url><event_location>Brussels, Belgium</event_location><slides>https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/events/attachments/fosdem-2025-4814-open-source-support-for-js-stored-programs-in-percona-server/slides/238825/Open-sour_Bi0nFa5.pdf</slides>https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-4814-open-source-support-for-js-stored-programs-in-percona-server/

Distributed Databases: Essential or Optional?

In the era of distributed systems, many modern databases are designed to scale horizontally from the ground up. Yet, some of the most widely used databases, like MySQL and PostgreSQL, remain single-node by design, relying on third-party sharding solutions like Citus or Vitess for distribution. This raises a critical question: do we always need to go distributed, or can replicated single-node databases meet most use cases? In this talk, we’ll explore the trade-offs between distributed and non-distributed architectures, evaluate the limits of single-node databases, and discuss when it truly makes sense to embrace distribution. Join us as we navigate the complexities of modern database design and uncover what’s best for your applications.

<event>FOSDEM 2025</event><event_url>https://fosdem.org/2025/</event_url><event_location>Brussels, Belgium</event_location><slides>https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/events/attachments/fosdem-2025-5743-distributed-databases-essential-or-optional-/slides/238292/FOSDEM20_oW602cK.pptx</slides>https://archive.fosdem.org/2025/schedule/event/fosdem-2025-5743-distributed-databases-essential-or-optional-/

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon - Open Source Community Edition

We’ve all heard the saying “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey,” well the same can be said of database Operators. It’s not about which Operator you are using to deploy your database to Kubernetes it’s about what you are trying to accomplish with what you are deploying. A quick search on OperatorHub.io lists 49 Database focused Operators and 11 PostgreSQL operators. Each have their own speciality and each have their own lifecycle. Choosing one today as it’s best fitting may no longer be the case soon. I argue that ranking one as better than the next is ineffective, instead you should be focused on the ‘what do I want to do,’ with my database deployment. This talk will focus on how to use the newest concepts in scaleable database deployment to stop worrying about the “how” and refocus again on the “what”.

<event>Cloud Native Rejects NA 2024</event>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKXMxK1lbWI&t=2377s

The Elephant Has No Clothes

PostgreSQL is the most popular open-source database among developers. It is one of the Top 5 databases in the world, and it is fully open source and community driven. But, PostgreSQL, the “Emperor” of databases, has no clothes! For all intents and purposes Slonik is “walking around naked” because there is no open source TDE solution to keep the elephant clothed. Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) is the way that data at rest protection can be done on the database level, ensuring the data is encrypted on the disk as well as in your backups and no application changes are required. While TDE is not available in PostgreSQL we created an extension that addresses (clothes the elephant) this issue and strengthens the security of your database. Join us as we tell the story of The Elephant Has No Clothes and how Percona is working to solve this issue by creating an open source TDE extension. We will go over data and findings that span the development of the extension, the added security benefits to your database, and point to what the future holds for TDE.

<event>PGConf EU 2024</event><event_url>https://2024.pgconf.eu/</event_url><event_location>Athens, Greece</event_location>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzjmNmH7OJ0

Kubernetes Turns 10: Time to Explore the Evolution of Databases on Kubernetes!

PostgreSQL encryption is a fundamental layer of security, essential for protecting sensitive data stored within databases. It’s a multifaceted approach encompassing mechanisms like Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and Transport Layer Security (TLS). TDE encrypts stored data, making it unreadable without the right keys, while SSL/TLS secures data in transit, preventing unauthorized access during communication between client applications and the database server. This talk serves as a compass in PostgreSQL encryption, guiding attendees through the available options and arming them with the insights to make well-informed choices in securing their invaluable data assets.

<event>Swiss PGDay 2024</event><event_location>Rapperswil</event_location>

Managing Database Containers with Kubernetes Operators and Docker

Disaster Recovery(DR) is critical for business continuity in the face of widespread outages taking down entire data centers or cloud provider regions. DR relies on deployment to multiple locations, data replication, monitoring for failure and failover. The process is typically manual involving several moving parts, and, even in the best case, involves some downtime for end-users. A multi-cluster K8s control plane presents the opportunity to automate the DR setup as well as the failure detection and failover. Such automation can dramatically reduce RTO and improve availability for end-users. This talk (and demo) describes one such setup using the open source Percona Operator for PostgreSQL and a multi-cluster K8s orchestrator. The orchestrator will use policy driven placement to replicate the entire workload on multiple clusters (in different regions), detect failure using pluggable logic, and do failover processing by promoting the standby as well as redirecting application traffic

<event>KubeCon NA 2023</event><event_url>https://events.linuxfoundation.org/kubecon-cloudnativecon-north-america/</event_url><event_location>Chicago, IL</event_location>

Cloud of Serfdom vs Cloud of Freedom: why open source will win in the Cloud age

Is the CPU load too high? PostgreSQL was designed to run almost everywhere. That flexibility provided out of the box represents a challenge for those running PostgreSQL on large servers and intensive workloads. Finding the proper parametrization in your system could be challenging: it requires knowledge, continuous monitoring, and tuning according to the workload changes. This session will explore the essential aspects of PostgreSQL parametrization and OS-related parametrization. It will provide insights into what should be monitored and how to modify configurations accordingly. After completing this session, you can boost your PostgreSQL cluster performance, effectively and consistently.

<event>Percona University Montevideo 2023</event><event_url>https://www.eventbrite.com/e/percona-university-buenos-aires-open-source-databases-event-tickets-719283605627</event_url><event_location>Montevideo, Uruguay</event_location><slides>/slides/2023/Agustin_Gallego_Percona_PostgreSQL_Parametrization_Hints_and_Optimization.pdf</slides>

22 reasons to migrate to MySQL 8

The pg_stat_monitor is the statistics collection tool based on PostgreSQL’s contrib module pg_stat_statements. PostgreSQL’s pg_stat_statements provides only detailed statistics from the last time it was reset, which is often not enough. This makes it harder to observe query performance patterns during specific times. Those patterns are what’s needed when debugging degraded query and server performance. pg_stat_monitor collects and aggregates data on time window basis. Additionally, it differentiates between queries originating from different applications, clients and users. And I haven’t even mentioned the queries execution timing histogram. These features make it especially useful in analyze query behavior generally and during specific time of a day. With plenty of configuration options, turning off actual query parameters, pg_stat_monitor covers observability from all different aspects without compromising on security. pg_stat_monitor is added to Percona Monitoring and Management to collect query metrics. It gives users the ability to see examples instead of fingerprints. Pg_stat_monitor provides more accurate data because of the bucket-based logic. The talk will cover the usage of pg_stat_monitor, its features, and how it can help to enhance your database inspection and monitoring.

<event>Swiss PGDay 2023</event><slides>https://www.pgday.ch/common/slides/2023_pg_stat_monitor.pdf</slides>

Introducción a los Operadores de Kubernetes for Beginners

Open Source databases became more popular than their proprietary counterparts in late 2021 which is a big thing. While this may be a win there are still several areas where the commercial competitors do much better. First, there is a lot of handholding for customers during trial periods and nearly constant outreach to ensure product adoption. Second, error messages are often written by junior developers (the least skilled) that give often cryptic declarations of the issue at hand to the befuddled. And we often treat projects that drive billion dollar companies as if they are still a group of hobbyists coders. In short we may have a better product but the environment around using that product needs to be upscaled rapidly or we risk sliding back into the days of proprietary dominated software constrained lives.

<event>Open Source Summit NAMA 2023</event><event_url>https://events.linuxfoundation.org/archive/2023/open-source-summit-north-america/</event_url>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-DDUDj36hg

JSON Data Improvements in MySQL 8.0

The JSON data type was introduced in MySQL 5.7 and was dramatically improved in version 8.0. Chief among these changes was the introduction of JSON_TABLE(), which temporarily transforms JSON data into structured data for processing with SQL commands such as window functions. And you also gain the ability to test JSON data for required fields, range checks, and data type checks to ensure that bad data does not make it into your database instance. These and other MySQL 8.,0 JSON features will be covered in this session.

<event>MySQL Summit 2023</event><event_url>https://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/events/mysql-summit.html</event_url><event_location>Redwood Shores, California</event_location><slides>/slides/2023/Oracle_MySQL_Summit_2023_JSON.pdf</slides>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF5TYJSbP9A

Kubernetes Operators: The Power of Automation

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning are intertwined capabilities that attempt to solve problems that defy traditional computational solutions — problems including fraud detection, voice recognition, and search result recommendations. While they elude simple computation, they are computationally expensive, involving the calculation of perhaps millions of probabilities and weights. These computations can be done outside the database, but there are specific advantages of doing machine learning inside it, close to where the data is stored. This presentation explains how to do machine learning inside the Postgres database.

<event>SCALE 19x 2022</event><slides>https://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale/19x/_assets/www.socallinuxexpo.org/sites/default/files/presentations/Scale19X-PostgreSQL-And-Artifical-Intelegence.pdf</slides>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KfUAPJKfMY

Query Optimization 101 in MySQL

In the current technology landscape, we have a lot of great innovation happening especially when it comes to Database Technology. These include the overall growth of open source and how this might have been impacted by Covid-19. We now have a new Cloud-Native database design coming to market using the power of Kubernetes as well as employing Serverless concepts. At a high level, we need to provision the hardware, install the software, configure monitoring, and set up a backup process. In this talk we will see how to develop a complete pipeline to deploy MongoDB sharded clusters at the push of a button, that can accomplish all of these tasks for you. By combining Terraform for the hardware provisioning, and Ansible for the software installation, we can completely automate the process, saving time and providing a standardized reusable solution.

<event>All Things Open 2021</event><event_url>https://2021.allthingsopen.org/</event_url><event_location>Raleigh</event_location>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTCXDmJD3cA

State of MySQL Security in 2021

With applying some chaos we can improve resiliency and reliability of a system that handles our data. In this talk I will discuss how we evaluate resiliency and reliability of our Percona XtraDB Cluster Operator (MySQL) and Percona Server for MongoDB Operator. We run MySQL and MongoDB in Kubernetes and we are looking to proving automatic deployment and management of database nodes and we need to make sure our data and management layer is able to sustain different kind of failures. For this I will discuss what kind of failures we are looking for, how we apply them and how database handle them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSgtUflRqCU

MySQL Performance for DevOps

In this presentation we take under consideration the increased use of Docker in corporate enviroments. It is a fact that Docker has found wide spread of use during the past years, mostly because of it being very easy to use , economic w.r.t recources used, fast and easy to deploy when compared with a full blown virtual machine. More and more servers are being operated as Docker hosts on which micro-services run in containers. From a security point of view, two aspects of it arise in the context of this talk and the inherent time-limitations it has. Firstly, the aspect of the already quite talked-through question, “is it secure ?”.Secondly the less analyzed aspect of incident analysis and the changes introduced with respect to known methods and evidence. In this presentation we will briefly outline some security considerations about Docker and the average user and then we will try to examine how Docker introduces changes to the workflow related to incident analysis and forensics in its environment.

<event>FOSDEM 2020</event><event_url>https://fosdem.org/2020/</event_url><event_location>Belgium</event_location>https://archive.fosdem.org/2020/schedule/event/security_docker_security_considerations_incident_analysis/

How to measure Linux Performance Wrong

Tests in the framework are written by MySQL Server developers and contributors and run to ensure build is working correctly. I found this is not the only thing which can be done with MTR. I regularly use it in my Support job to help customers and verify bug reports. With MySQL Test Framework I can: • Create complicated environment in single step and re-use it later • Test same scenario on dozens of MySQL/Percona/MariaDB server versions with single command • Test concurrent scenarios • Test errors and return codes • Work with results, external commands, stored routines Everything with single script which can be reused on any machine any time with any MySQL/Percona/MariaDB Server version.
