Speaker: Kris Buytaert

Most content comparing monitoring and observability stays at the definitional level: three pillars, metrics versus traces, known and unknown unknowns. This session skips that and looks at the operational side instead.

Kris Buytaert (Percona) and Blerim Sheqa (Icinga) walk through what it actually takes to run each approach — how long it takes to get the first useful data, what can and cannot be covered, where the configuration lives and who owns it, and how much engineering time goes into keeping it working month after month. A second thread: what changes with scale, from a 50-host environment to a 5,000-host enterprise.

Kris Buytaert

Kris Buytaert is a long-time DevOps and Open Source expert and engineering leader. He recently joined Percona as Practice Lead, Observability. He is one of the instigators of the DevOps movement and has started more than one conference series. He has lost count of how many times he has spoken at other events. He spends most of his time bridging the gap between developers and operations, while warning people not to make the mistakes he made. He builds infrastructures that can survive the 10th floor test or a datacenter fire, while actively promoting the DevOps idea.
